Message from the Superintendent: Transportation & DLA

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As we await direction from the governor regarding how we will start school in September, we are requesting information from families now regarding two topics that will help us plan for the new school year under any scenario: 1) high school transportation needs, and 2) family interest in a separate 100% distance learning option. This message requests that you take action by 9 p.m., Sunday, August 9; your responses will help the school district plan bus transportation and a new optional full-year Distance Learning Academy.

Request transportation (gr. 9-12 only) by August 9
Given the unusual circumstances this year, we are asking parents/guardians to indicate whether their grade 9-12 student is planning to ride the school bus  (if eligible) for the 2020/2021 school year. (Not sure if your child is eligible for transportation? Verify here.) The purpose of this request is to ensure that bus capacities comply with COVID-19 guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE).

Please note: If your student is receiving transportation as part of their individualized education plan (IEP), transportation has already been arranged and you do not need to request it.

Please complete the form below no later than 9:00 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2020. Your response is important to our bus assignment process.

NEW 2020-2021 Request for High School Transportation

*Note: If your student’s transportation needs change during the school year or if you have any questions, please contact us at or 763-391-7244. Please allow one week for changes to take effect.

Register for optional Distance Learning Academy (gr. K-12) by August 9
Families who prefer a 100% distance learning option for students K-12 may register for the district’s new Distance Learning Academy. This option is available to all K-12 families, separate from the district’s implementation of the three instructional models (in-person, hybrid or distance learning). We recognize the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic brings to students and families, and our Distance Learning Academy will provide a valued alternative to those who choose not to physically attend school.

In alignment with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) guidelines, our programming will provide students learning in all required state standards, English Learner (EL) services, and Special Education services.

  • Elementary students will experience similar academic opportunities as their peers, but through a virtual environment.

  • Secondary course offerings will focus on core subject areas and graduation requirements. Elective courses will be offered, but they may be limited due to available resources to run specific courses.

Students will be assigned to a dedicated licensed teacher to provide learning and support through a blend of live virtual sessions, video tutorials, and independent work. Students in grades K-5 will complete lessons in Seesaw and students in grades 6-12 will complete lessons in Schoology. Students will use the suite of Osseo Area Schools digital tools and available apps. All students will be provided with a personal learning device for their learning, and support for internet access will be available for families.

To learn more about the Distance Learning Academy, please visit our Distance Learning Academy website.

Currently enrolled families who would like to register for the Distance Learning Academy should complete the registration form below by 9:00 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2020.   [updated 8/7: new deadline is 9 pm, Wednesday, August 12]

Enrollment in the Distance Learning Academy is a full school-year commitment. Requests to leave the Distance Learning Academy and return to your home school during the school year are not guaranteed. Requests to change will be reviewed prior to the start of trimesters 2 & 3, and accommodations will be based on the availability of licensed teachers and transportation.

If you need assistance completing the Distance Learning Academy registration form, please leave a message at 763-391-7000. Families who register for the Distance Learning Academy will receive more information after August 9.
