What happens if there is a confirmed case of the coronavirus in a student or employee?

The district may be informed of a positive COVID 19 test by the Minnesota Dept. of Health (MDH), the student family, or a staff member. Once notified of a lab-confirmed test, the district notification protocol (which follows MDH guidance) begins.

There are two types of notifications:

  1. Close contact notification:  MDH defines close contact as contact less than 6 feet from the person testing positive for more than 15 minutes.  Anyone who is within close contact of the person who tested positive during a specified time frame must quarantine for 14 days from the date of exposure.
  2. General notification:  Anyone who was at the site during the timeframe specified by MDH is notified that they have been exposed to a low risk exposure and they are advised to monitor for symptoms. Those that have been deemed low risk can continue to work or attend school as long as they are symptom free.

Those who had close contact with the confirmed case will receive the following message by email:

Dear first name(s),

(Your student has) (You have) been identified as a Confirmed Close Contact of someone tested positive for COVID-19. The date of the exposure was on (DATE). Please quarantine for 14 days from that date and monitor for symptoms. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let us know.

For students, please work with your school for distance learning resources. For staff, please work with your supervisor to work remotely for the duration of the quarantine period.

Your return date to the buildings will be (DATE).

Thank you,
District COVID Response Team

Those who were in the same building as the confirmed case but were not close contacts will receive the following general notification by email:

We were notified by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) or otherwise notified of a lab confirmed case of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in a member of the School Name community with exposure date(s) of date.

We have worked with MDH to identify who had close contact with the individual and have already communicated with each of them individually.

You are receiving this notice because you or your child were in the building at the same time as the individual with the confirm diagnosis. According to MDH the risk of exposure for persons present in the building on that date is no greater than the risk of contracting the virus in the general community.

For privacy reasons, we cannot share any details about the status of the person other than to note that they are either staying home and/or working at home for at least 10 days. Any staff or students who have been in close contact with the individual have been notified that they must also stay home and/or work from home for 14 days.

Because you are receiving this message, you or your child are not considered to be at high risk, and there is nothing additional you need to do. Please visit MDH website if you have any further questions.

Thank you, Collin O’Brien District COVID Response Team
